Diphenoxylate hydrochloride, atropine sulphate.
Description
Each tablet contains: Diphenoxylate Hydrochloride 2.5mg, Atropine Sulphate 0.025mg.
Action
Diphenoxylate reduces intestinal motility and has a constipating effect. Atropine is an anticholinergic agent. It reduces smooth muscle tone and diminishes gastric and intestinal motility.
Indications/Uses
It is used exclusively for the symptomatic treatment of diarrhoea.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adults: The recommended initial dosage is two tablets four times daily.
Children: Sun-Dianox Tablet is not recommended for children under 12 years of age.
After initial control has been achieved, the dosage may be reduced to meet individual requirements. Reduction of dosage may be made as soon as initial control of symptoms has been achieved. If no response occurs within 48 hours, this preparation is unlikely to be effective.
Contraindications
This preparation is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to diphenoxylate hydrochloride or atropine and in patients who have obstructive jaundice. It is also contraindicated in the treatment of diarrhoea associated with pseudomembranous enterocolitis.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
Usage During Pregnancy: The use of this preparation during pregnancy requires that the potential benefits be weighed against any possible hazard to the mother and child.
Adverse Reactions
Atropine effects such as dryness of the skin and mucous membranes, flushing, hyperthermia, tachycardia and urinary retention may occur. Other adverse reactions reported are: Gastrointestinal: anorexia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, paralytic ileus, toxic megacolon.
Allergic: pruritus, swelling of gums, giant urticaria, angioneurotic oedema.
Nervous System: dizziness, drowsiness, sedation, headache, malaise/lethargy, restlessness, euphoria, depression, respiratory depression, coma, numbness of extremities.
Drug Interactions
The concurrent use of this preparation with monoamine oxidase inhibitors may precipitate hypertensive crisis. Diphenoxylate may potentiate the action of alcohol, barbiturates and tranquilisers. Antipsychotic agents may potentiate the effects of atropine.
Caution For Usage
Incompatibilities: Atropine is incompatible with alkalis, iodine, mercury salts and tannic acid.
