Mecobalamin is a form of vitamin B12 that is needed by the body to keep the nervous system and blood cells healthy. It is used to treat peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage that causes tingling, numbness, and pain usually in the hands and feet) and megaloblastic anaemia (low red blood cell count in the body where the red blood cells are larger than normal).
Take this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Try to take it at the same time each day.
Mecobalamin must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
For as long as you are taking this medicine, you may need to have regular blood tests to check your body's response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have blood tests.
Mecobalamin may cause any of the following side effects: headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, rash, and feeling hot.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- aspirin (medicine for pain and inflammation; blood-thinning medicine)
- colchicine (medicine for gout [high uric acid level in the blood])
- metformin (medicine for diabetes)
- certain antibiotics e.g. chloramphenicol, neomycin
- cholesterol-lowering medicines e.g. colestyramine, colestipol
- medicines that neutralises stomach acids e.g. omeprazole, ranitidine
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Mecobalamin.
Inform your doctor if you are currently taking birth control pills as this can reduce the effectiveness of Mecobalamin. You should not stop or start any birth control pills without first informing your doctor. Ask your doctor about using non-hormonal birth control as an alternative while being treated with this medicine.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Protect from light and moisture.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
