Gemfibrozil is 5-(2.5-dimethylphenoxy)-2,2-dimethylpentanoic acid.
Ipolipid is a valeric acid derivative.
Ipolipid is a lipid-regulating agent which lowers elevated serum lipids primarily by decreasing serum triglyceride with a variable reduction in total serum cholesterol.
These decreases occur primarily in the very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) fractions and less frequently in the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) fraction. In addition, Ipolipid increases the high-density lipoprotein (HDL). The mechanism of action is not clear.
Ipolipid is well absorbed by oral route. Peak plasma levels occur in 1-2 hrs after oral administration with a plasma t½ of 1.5 hrs following single dose.
Lipid disorders eg, Fredrickson types IIA, IIB, III, IV and V; hyperlipidemia associated with diabetes; and xanthomata associated with hyperlipidemias.
Prevention of coronary heart disease.
Adults: Recommended Dose: 1200 mg daily in 2 divided doses 30 min before morning and evening meal. Some patients will experience therapeutic effect on 900 mg/day, a few may require 1500 mg/day for satisfactory results.
While there has been no reported case of overdosage, symptomatic supportive measures should be taken should it occur.
Hepatic renal dysfunction.
Gemfibrozil should be used with caution in patients receiving anticoagulants. The dosage of anticoagulants should be reduced by ½ to maintain prothrombin time at the desired level to prevent bleeding complications. Frequent prothrombin determinations are advisable until the prothrombin level is stabilized.
Use in pregnancy: Safety in pregnancy has not been established.
Use in pregnancy: Safety in pregnancy has not been established.
Gastrointestinal complaints were the most frequent reported adverse reactions but were not usually severe enough to necessitate cessation of therapy.
Concurrent use of gemfibrozil with anticoagulants coumarin-orindandione derivative, may significantly increase the anticoagulant effect; adjustment of anticoagulant dosage based on frequent prothrombin time determinations is recommended.
Store in a dry place at a temperature not exceeding 25°C. Protect from light.
C10AB04 - gemfibrozil ; Belongs to the class of fibrates. Used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia.
