Salbutamol sulphate.
Description
Azmasol inhaler is an environment friendly, CFC-free inhaler. It contains Salbutamol (as Salbutamol Sulphate BP) as the active ingredient which is a β2-adrenoceptor agonist used in the treatment of asthma and other forms of diffuse reversible airways obstruction.
Indications/Uses
Azmasol (Salbutamol) inhaler is indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of bronchial asthma and for the treatment of reversible airways obstruction associated with bronchitis and emphysema. Azmasol (Salbutamol) inhaler may be used to relieve attacks of acute dyspnoea and may also be taken prophylactically before exertion or to prevent exercise-induced asthma.
It is suitable for treating bronchospasm in patients with coexisting heart disease or hypertension, including those taking beta-blockers, because of its selective action on the bronchial receptors and lack of effects on the cardiovascular system. Salbutamol is a sympathomimetic agent which has a highly selective action on beta-adrenergic receptors in bronchial muscle. At therapeutic levels, it has little effect on cardiac receptors.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adults: For the relief of acute bronchospasm and for managing intermittent episodes of asthma: one or two inhalation as a single dose;
For chronic maintenance or prophylactic therapy: two inhalations three or four times daily; for prevention of exercise induced bronchospasm: two inhalations before exertion.
Children: For the relief of acute bronchospasm, management of episodic asthma and for prevention of exercise induced bronchospasm: one inhalation;
For routine maintenance and prophylaxis: one inhalation three or four times daily, increasing if necessary to two inhalations three or four times daily.
Elderly: The dosage is the same as that for adults.
Contraindications
Although intravenous Salbutamol, and occasionally Salbutamol tablets, are used in the management of premature labour uncomplicated by conditions such as placenta praevia, antepartum haemorrhage or toxaemia of pregnancy, Salbutamol inhaler preparations are not appropriate for managing premature labour. Salbutamol preparation should not be used for threatened abortion during the first or second trimesters of pregnancy. Salbutamol inhaler is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any of its components.
Special Precautions
In the event of previously effective dose of Salbutamol inhaler failing to give relief for at least three hours, the patient should be advised to seek medical advice in order that any necessary additional steps may be taken. Salbutamol should be administered cautiously to patients suffering from thyrotoxicosis.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
Although intravenous Salbutamol, and occasionally Salbutamol tablets, are used in the management of premature labour uncomplicated by conditions such as placenta praevia, antepartum haemorrhage or toxaemia of pregnancy, Salbutamol inhaler preparations are not appropriate for managing premature labour. Salbutamol preparation should not be used for threatened abortion during the first or second trimesters of pregnancy.
Side Effects
Mild tremor and headache have been rarely reported. These usually disappear with continuous treatment. There have been very rare reports of transient muscle cramp. Hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema, urticaria, bronchospasm, hypotension and collapse have been reported very rarely.
As with other inhalation therapy, the potential for paradoxical bronchospasm should be kept in mind. If it occurs, the preparation should be discontinued immediately and alternative therapy should be instituted.
Caution For Usage
Instructions for Use: Azmasol inhaler should be primed before using it for the first time. The patient should also prime inhaler when the inhaler has not been used for more than 14 days or when the inhaler has been dropped.
To prime, simply shake the inhaler well and then spray 4 times into the air away from the face, shaking well before each spray.
Priming ensures that your inhaler delivers the correct dose. Once primed, the inhaler is ready to use and deliver the correct amount of medicine.
1. Remove the cap from the mouthpiece of the actuator.
2. Make sure the mouthpiece is clean inside and outside.
3. Hold the inhaler by placing index finger on top of the metal canister and thumb on the bottom of the plastic mouthpiece. Shake it well.
4. Raise the Inhaler to the mouth. Put the mouthpiece between the teeth, but do not bite it. Close lips around the mouthpiece. Breathe out slowly and gently through the Inhaler until lungs feel comfortably empty.
5. Tilt head back slightly. Start to breathe in slowly through the mouth. As the patient start to breathe in, press down firmly on the top of the can to release medicine continue to breathe in steadily and deeply.
6. Hold breath. Remove the inhaler from mouth. Continue to hold breath as long as possible, up to 10 seconds. Then breathe out gently. If taking a second puff, wait about one minute, then repeat steps 3 to 6.
7. Replace the mouthpiece cap after each use.
In case of emergency situation when the patient do not feel relieved despite using inhaler, the patient can use inhaler along with spacer (a device that the doctor advise to use with inhaler). This may save patient's life on the way to hospital. For more information, consult with physician.
A handy tip for Children: Children and others who have weaker hands may have difficulty pressing down on the top of the can with just one hand. They can use both hands to make Inhaler work.
Cleaning inhaler: Keeping the plastic actuator clean is very important to prevent medicine buildup and blockage. The actuator should be washed, shaken to remove excess water and air-dried thoroughly at least once a week. The inhaler may stop spraying if not properly cleaned.
1. Remove the metal canister from the plastic casing of the inhaler and remove the mouthpiece cover.
2. Rinse the actuator thoroughly with warm water.
3. Dry the actuator thoroughly inside and outside.
4. Replace the metal canister and the mouthpiece cover.
5. Do not put the metal canister in water.
