Meropenem trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Pneumonia & nosocomial pneumonia, UTI, intra-abdominal, gynecological, skin & skin structure infections, meningitis & septicemia in adults & childn. Empiric treatment for suspected infection in adult patients w/ febrile neutropenia (as mono- or combined therapy w/ antiviral or antifungal agents).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Recommended daily dose: Adult Pneumonia, UTI, gynecological, skin & skin structure infections 500 mg IV. Nosocomial pneumonia, peritonitis, suspected infections in neutropenic patients & septicemia 1 g IV. Meningitis 2 g IV. Childn >3 mth to 12 yr 10-20 mg/kg depending on the type & severity of infection, susceptibility of the pathogens, & condition; >50 kg body wt Adult dose. Meningitis 40 mg/kg. All doses are to be administered 8 hrly.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Discontinue if allergic reaction occurs; antibiotic associated colitis & pseudomembranous colitis; seizure, +ve direct or indirect Coombs test; concomitant use w/ valproic acid/Na valproate. Monitor liver function in patients w/ preexisting liver disorders. Pregnancy & lactation. Infants <3 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Thrombocythaemia; headache; diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain; increased alanine & aspartate aminotransferase, blood alkaline phosphatase, blood lactate, dehydrogenase, γ-glutamyltransferase; rash, pruritus; inflammation, pain.
Drug Interactions
Increased elimination t½ & plasma conc w/ probenecid. Reduced serum levels of valproic acid. Increase anticoagulant effect of warfarin.
