Indications/Uses
Treatment & prevention of folate deficiency state. For women of child-bearing potential & pregnant women to protect against neural tube defects in their offspring.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Folate-deficient megaloblastic anemia 5 mg daily for 4 mth. Malabsorption states Up to 15 mg daily. Chronic hemolytic states 5 mg every 1-7 days depending on the diet & rate of hemolysis. Prevention of neural tube defects in the offspring of pregnant women & women w/ child-bearing potential 5 mg daily starting before pregnancy & continued through the 1st trimester.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Should never be given alone or w/ inadequate amounts of vit B12 for the treatment of undiagnosed megaloblastic anemia; may produce a hematopoietic response in patients w/ megaloblastic anemia due to vit B12 deficiency w/o preventing aggravation of neurological symptoms.
Adverse Reactions
Rarely, GI disturbances & hypersensitivity reactions.
Drug Interactions
Folate deficiency states may be produced by antiepileptics, OCs, anti-TB drugs, alcohol, & folic acid antagonists eg, MTX, pyrimethamine, triamterene, trimethoprim, & sulfonamides.
