Gentamicin sulfate
Indications/Uses
Serious UTI, bacteremia, meningitis, cerebral ventriculitis, infected burns, osteomyelitis, pneumonia, peritonitis & otitis caused by suspected gm -ve bacteria.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1-1.7 mg/kg every 8 hr. Childn 2-2.5 mg/kg every 8 hr. Infant & neonate 2.5 mg/kg every 8 hr. Premature/full-term neonate ≤1 wk 2.5 mg/kg every 12 hr. Patients w/ compromised renal function undergoing hemodialysis Adult 1-1.7 mg/kg. Childn 2 mg/kg. To be given at the end of dialysis.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to gentamicin or other aminoglycosides.
Special Precautions
Neuromuscular blockade & resp paralysis in patients receiving anesth, neuromuscular blockers or massive transfusions of citrate anticoagulated blood; myasthenia gravis. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Nephrotoxic (renal) effects; dizziness, tinnitus, vertigo, roaring in the ears & hearing loss; numbness, skin tingling, muscle twitching, convulsions & myasthenia gravis-like syndrome; resp depression; lethargy; confusion, depression; visual disturbances; decreased appetite; wt loss; hypotension & HTN; rash, itching, urticaria, generalized burning; laryngeal edema; anaphylactoid reactions, fever; headache; nausea, vomiting; increased salivation; stomatitis; purpura; pseudotumor cerebri; acute organic brain syndrome; pulmonary fibrosis; alopecia; joint pain; transient hepatomegaly & splenomegaly.
Drug Interactions
Avoid use w/ other neurotoxic &/or nephrotoxic drugs. Ototoxicity w/ potent diuretics. Reduced serum t1/2 in patients w/ severe renal impairment w/ carbenicillin.
