Flupentixol decanoate
Indications/Uses
Schizophrenia & other psychoses, especially w/ symptoms eg, apathy, inertia, w/drawal, anxiety & energy. Paraphrenia. Oligophrenic & epileptic patients w/ mental deviations.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM Chronic schizophrenia & other chronic psychoses 20-40 mg every 2nd-4th wk.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Circulatory collapse, depressed level of consciousness due to any cause (eg, intoxication w/ alcohol, barbiturates or opiates), coma. Excitable or agitated patients.
Special Precautions
Carefully monitor patients on long-term therapy. Patients w/ convulsive disorders or advanced hepatic, renal or CV disease. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Extrapyramidal symptoms (eg, akathisia, dystonia, tardive dyskinesia), QT prolongation, VTE, cerebrovascular events, anticholinergic effects (eg, xerostomia, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention), blood dyscrasias (eg, agranulocytosis, neutropenia, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia), diabetic ketoacidosis, oesophageal dysmotility & aspiration, falls, orthostatic hypotension, impaired core body temp regulation, increased prolactin levels, w/drawal symptoms; palpitation, tachycardia; abnormal vision, accommodation disorder; nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, diarrhoea, sialorrhoea; fatigue, asthenia; increased wt; increased appetite; myalgia; dizziness, drowsiness, headache, hyper- or hypokinesia, tremor; depression, insomnia, nervousness, agitation, disturbance in attention; micturition disorder; decreased libido; dyspnoea; hyperhidrosis, pruritus; suicidal thoughts or attempts, arrhythmias, NMS.
Drug Interactions
May potentiate the effects of other CNS depressants, barbiturates, general anaesth, & anticoagulants. May increase risk of QT interval prolongation w/ class Ia & III antiarrhythmics (eg, quinidine, sotalol), erythromycin, moxifloxacin, cisapride, thioridazine, & thiazide diuretics. May prolong the action of neuromuscular blocking agents. May potentiate the anticholinergic effects of atropine. May increase risk of extrapyramidal effects w/ metoclopramide & piperazine. May enhance the hypotensive effects of hydralazine, doxazosin, & methyldopa. May reverse the antihypertensive effects of guanethidine. Increased risk of neurotoxicity w/ lithium & sibutramine. May impair efficacy of adrenergic agents, levodopa & anticonvulsants. May inhibit the metabolism of TCAs. Antagonized effects of epinephrine & sympathomimetics. May modify insulin & glucose response.
