Iron (as Ferrous fumarate), folic acid, vitamin B12.
Description
Each softgel capsule contains Ferrous Fumarate, EP 162.00 mg (equivalent to Iron 53.25 mg), Folic Acid, EP 750.00 mcg, Cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12) 7.50 mcg.
Indications/Uses
Iron (as Ferrous Fumarate) + Folic Acid + Vitamin B12 (Ferrovit) is intended to provide an indispensable support to individuals, especially women, for the prevention and treatment of anemia due to nutritional and iron deficiency anemia that may be due to pregnancy, lactation and menstrual blood loss.
Iron is an essential component in the physiological formation of hemoglobin, adequate amounts of which are necessary for effective hemoglobin formation and the resultant oxygen transport capacity of the blood.
Folic acid and Vitamin B12 reduce the incidence of neural tube defects in infants as well as pernicious anemia. These are needed by the bone marrow to form red blood cells and are also needed in all the other tissues of the body for adequate growth - when they are lacking; red blood cells are usually larger (mega) than normal, poorly formed and very fragile.
Dosage/Direction for Use
One (1) capsule twice a day or as prescribed by a physician.
Missed Dose: Take the missed dose as soon as the patient remembers it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and use the next dose when it is meant to. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
Overdosage
When Taken More Than the Recommended Dosage: If the patient (or someone else) accidentally taken more than the recommended dosage, consult a doctor or contact the nearest accident and emergency department.
Contraindications
Individuals with known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
Should be used with medical advice during Pregnancy & Lactation.
Hemochromatosis and hemosiderosis are contraindicated to iron therapy.
Folic acid is contraindicated in patients with pernicious anemia.
Folic acid should not be prescribed until the diagnosis of pernicious anemia has been eliminated, since it can alleviate hematologic manifestations while allowing neurological damages to continue undetected.
Cyanocobalamin should, if possible, not be given to patients without confirming first the diagnosis, and should not be used to treat megaloblastic anemia of pregnancy. Administration of doses greater than 10 mcg daily may produce a hematological response in patients with folate deficiency; indiscriminate use may mask precise diagnosis.
Special Precautions
When to Consult a Doctor: If the patient is allergic (hypersensitive) to active substances or any of the other ingredients.
If any undesirable effect occurs.
If the patient is pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a doctor before using this product.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
Cyanocobalamin should not be used to treat megaloblastic anemia of pregnancy.
If the patient is pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a doctor before using this product.
Adverse Reactions
Average or excessive doses in hypersensitive individuals may cause nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, skin rash, precordial pain, or flushing of the face and extremities. Constipation, black and tarry stools are the most common side effects associated with supplemental iron.
Drug Interactions
Absorption of iron is inhibited by magnesium trisilicate, antacids and the ingestion of eggs or milk so the iron supplements should be taken one (1) hour before or two (2) hours after eating dairy products, eggs, coffee, tea, whole-grain breads and cereals, antacids or calcium supplements.
Absorption of vitamin B12 from the gastrointestinal tract may be reduced by aminoglycosides, aminosalicylic acid, anticonvulsants, biguanides, chloramphenicol, cholestyramine, cimetidine, colchicines, potassium salts, and methyldopa. Serum concentrations may be decreased by concurrent administration of oral contraceptives. Many of these interactions are unlikely to be of clinical significance but should not be taken into account when performing assays for blood concentrations.
Caution For Usage
Do not use if there are any significant changes in appearance of the softgel capsule.
Storage
Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight.
