Levetiracetam
Indications/Uses
Adjunct in partial seizures w/ or w/o secondary generalizations, myoclonic seizures, & primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult ≥16 yr 1,000 mg/day, daily dose given in 2 divided doses (500 mg bid), may be increased in steps of 1 g every 2-4 wk until effective antiepileptic control is achieved. Max: 3 g daily. Childn <50 kg 20 mg/kg daily, may be increased in steps of 20 mg/kg every 2 wk to max of 60 mg/kg daily; >50 kg Adult dose. Monotherapy 500 mg daily, increased after 2 wk to 1 g daily. Further increases may be made in steps of 500 mg every wk up to max of 3 g daily.
Special Precautions
Patients undergoing hemodialysis. W/drawal of therapy. Renal impairment & severe hepatic impairment. Not recommended during pregnancy & in women of childbearing potential not using contraception, & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Somnolence, weakness & dizziness. Anorexia, diarrhea, dyspepsia, nausea, ataxia, headache, amnesia, depression, emotional lability, insomnia, nervousness, tremor, vertigo, diplopia & rash. Mild infections eg, common cold & URTI. Alopecia. Abnormal behavior, aggression, anger, anxiety, confusion, hallucinations, irritability, psychotic disorders. Blood dyscrasias eg, neutropenia, pancytopenia & thrombocytopenia.
Drug Interactions
Symptoms of carbamazepine toxicity when added to carbamazepine therapy due to pharmacodynamic mechanism.
