Ciprofloxacin HCl
Indications/Uses
UTI, anthrax, biliary tract infections, infected bites & stings, bone & joint infections, cat scratch disease, chancroid, exacerbations of cystic fibrosis, gastroenteritis & gonorrhea.
Dosage/Direction for Use
250-750 mg bid depending on the severity & nature of the infection. Acute uncomplicated cystitis 100 mg bid. Gonorrhea 250 or 500 mg as single dose depending upon patterns of resistance. Meningococcal meningitis prophylaxis 500 mg as single dose. Surgical infection prophylaxis 500 mg as single dose, given 60-90 min pre-op.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimise GI discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolones. Myasthenia gravis. Lactation.
Special Precautions
Discontinue in the presence of hypersensitivity reactions; depression or psychoses leading to self-endangered behavior. Patients w/ epilepsy & history of CNS disorders. Maintain adequate hydration & avoid excessive urine alkalinity. May cause tendon damage (eg, tendonitis, tendon rupture) during or after treatment. Do not use in patients w/ myasthenia gravis. May cause photosensitivity reaction; avoid direct exposure to UV irradiation or extensive sunlight.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain & dyspepsia; CNS effects eg, headache, dizziness, restlessness; photosensitivity; anaphylaxis; transient increases in serum creatine or BUN.
Drug Interactions
Potentiated hypotensive & sedative effects of tizanidine. Elevated serum conc & prolonged elimination t½ of theophylline. May slow down the liver processing of clozapine. Synergism & alteration of physiological control loop of vit K w/ warfarin. Do not take orally when in concomitant use w/ Al hydroxide. Reduced effectiveness w/ products containing Mg, Al, Ca, Fe &/or other minerals. May cause dangerous abnormal heart rhythm w/ oral ondansetron.
