Salbutamol sulfate
Indications/Uses
Prevention &/or relief of bronchospasm associated w/ reversible obstructive airway diseases eg, bronchial asthma & COPD. Pulmoneb: Treatment of acute exacerbations of asthma.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Syr Adult & childn >12 yr 5-10 mL. Childn 7-12 yr 5 mL, 2-6 yr 2.5-5 mL. To be taken tid or qid. Pulmoneb Adult & childn 2.5-5 mg 6-8 hrly as needed.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Worsening asthma. CV disorders including coronary insufficiency, cardiac arrhythmias or HTN; convulsive disorders; hyperthyroidism; DM; patients unusually responsive to sympathomimetic amines. Acute severe asthma. Monitor plasma K conc in severe asthma. Pregnancy & lactation. Pulmoneb: Discontinue use if paradoxical bronchospasm occurs. Concomitant use w/ nebulized anticholinergic in patients w/ actual or potential glaucoma.
Adverse Reactions
Hand tremors, nervousness, headache, tachycardia, palpitations, cough, wheezing, hoarseness, vomiting, urticaria, angioedema, rash, anaphylaxis, paradoxical bronchospasm, oropharyngeal edema, HTN, peripheral edema, arrhythmias, collapse, angina, vertigo, CNS stimulation, dry mouth, hypokalemia. Syr: Young childn: Hyperkinesia, emotional lability, fatigue, pallor, GI symptoms, conjunctivitis. Pulmoneb: Dizziness, insomnia, asthma exacerbation, bronchitis, nasal congestion, rhinitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, viral infection, hemoptysis, otitis media, nausea, diarrhea, hypertonia, asthenia, back pain, fever, lymphadenopathy.
Drug Interactions
Other oral or aerosol sympathomimetic bronchodilators, epinephrine; MAOIs, TCAs; β-blockers.
