Indications/Uses
Prevention & treatment of hypovolemic syndrome & aversion of CV collapse. Emergency treatment of shock & burns. Management of hypoproteinemia w/ or w/o edema & neonatal hyperbilirubinemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Individualized dosage. Adult Initial infusion of 100 mL. Total adult dosage: 25-75 g/day. Childn ¼-½ adult dose or 2.2 mL/kg (0.44 g/kg). Shock Initially 2 mL/kg, a subsequent dose of 1 mL/kg may be repeated after 15-30 min if initial dose is inadequate. Burns 2 mL/kg. Hypoproteinemia Adult 50-70 g/day. Childn 25 g/day.
Contraindications
HTN, severe anemia or cardiac failure w/ normal or increased intravascular vol.
Special Precautions
Low cardiac reserve. Monitor for signs of increased venous pressure. Should be administered w/ additional fluids to patients w/ marked dehydration. Do not use if turbid or >4 hr after exposure or after frozen. Do not infuse rapidly. Do not infuse through the same administration set w/ soln containing protein hydrolysates or alcohol.
Adverse Reactions
Allergic reactions; fever & chills; rash, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia. Rapid infusion: Vascular overload w/ resultant pulmonary edema.
