Cefalexin monohydrate
Indications/Uses
Urinary tract, resp tract, otitis media, skin infections & other infections due to sensitive organisms.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1-2 g daily given in divided doses 6-8 or 12 hrly intervals. Severe infections Up to 6 g daily. Childn 25-100 mg/kg daily in divided doses up to max: 4 g daily. Prophylaxis of recurrent UTI 125 mg at night.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cefalexin or other cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Allergic patients especially history of penicillin allergy. Severe renal impairment.
Adverse Reactions
GI discomfort, diarrhea, allergic reactions eg, skin rashes, urticaria, eosinophilia, angioedema, anaphylaxis; rises in liver enzyme value.
Drug Interactions
Bacteriostatic antibiotics. Probenecid.
