Secnidazole is used to treat certain parasitic infections of the bowel or vagina. It may also be used for bacterial infections of the vagina.
This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Secnidazole exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist about whether you should take this medicine with or without food. Different brands of this medicine may be taken differently.
This medicine may be taken once or for several days. If you are advised to take this medicine for several days, try to take it at the same time each day.
Secnidazole is available as a tablet or as granules.
If you are taking the oral granules, sprinkle the entire contents of the sachet onto applesauce, yoghurt or pudding. The granules will not dissolve. Take the mixture within 30 minutes without crushing or chewing the granules. You may drink a glass of water after taking your dose to help you swallow the medicine.
Do not dissolve the granules in water or any other liquid.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your infection.
If you are taking Secnidazole for several days, take it at regular intervals. Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of this medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled.
If you are taking Secnidazole for several days and you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not take Secnidazole if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or similar medicines such as metronidazole.
Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with this medicine and for 96 hours after taking it.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Secnidazole to a child for the treatment of parasitic infections of the bowel. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.
Avoid prolonged use of this medicine.
Secnidazole may cause any of the following side effects: headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, soreness or swelling inside the mouth, change in taste, and vaginal itching or discharge.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking blood-thinning medicines (e.g. warfarin).
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
