Nadroparin - subcutaneous/intravenous

Patient Medicine Information
Why do I need this medicine?
Nadroparin is used to treat deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the leg veins) and pulmonary embolism (blood clots in a lung artery).

This medicine may also be used to prevent blocked vessels by a blood clot during kidney dialysis.

Nadroparin may also be used together with other medicines to treat unstable angina (chest pain that occurs randomly or unexpectedly) and a certain type of heart attack.
How do I use this medicine?
Nadroparin is to be injected subcutaneously (into the fatty layer under the skin such as the abdomen area or thigh). When used for the treatment of unstable angina and certain heart attack, this medicine may also be injected intravenously (into the vein).

Your doctor or nurse will administer the injection for you. If you or a caregiver had been given the proper training on the preparation and injection techniques, you or your caregiver may do the administration.

Nadroparin is available in a prefilled syringe or vials.

Use this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not administer more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Do not inject into the same area all the time. New injection sites should be at least 1.5 inches away from the previous injection site. Do not inject near the navel (belly button).

The dose of Nadroparin will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the course of the treatment depending on your condition and response to the medication.
What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?
Ensure that you keep all appointments with your doctor so that you do not miss any dose. Your doctor also needs to regularly monitor your response to Nadroparin.

If you miss an appointment or miss an injection, alert your doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment or injection should be given as soon as possible.

If you or a caregiver had been trained to administer this medicine and missed a dose, alert your doctor immediately.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • active bleeding or any blood clot disorder
  • active stomach ulcer
  • history of low platelet counts due to this medicine
  • infection of the lining of the heart and heart valves
  • severe kidney disease
as Nadroparin may not be suitable for you.
What should I take note of while using this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • severe high blood pressure
  • history of stomach ulcer
  • eye problems
  • diabetes
  • metabolic acidosis (a condition when there is too much acid in the blood)
  • undergone recent surgery of the brain, spinal cord, or eyes
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you are going to have an operation, including minor surgery and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are being treated with Nadroparin.

Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
  • Your platelet count may go beyond the safe levels without you noticing it.
  • Routine tests (e.g. complete blood count with platelet count, liver and kidney function, stool tests) may be done before and during your treatment with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
  • Regular monitoring for signs of bleeding may also be needed.
What side effects could I experience?
Nadroparin may cause any of the following side effects: headache, migraine, and rash, redness, itching or bruising at the injection site.

This medicine may cause the level of your platelets to drop.

Platelets help your blood to clot when there is a cut in the skin. A fall in the level of your platelets may put you at risk of bleeding more than usual. Do not take part in activities where you may fall or get injured, such as contact sports. Inform your doctor if you get any unusual bruising (large bruises or several bruises, especially if the bruises appeared on their own) or bleeding that takes a long time to stop (for example, too much bleeding when you floss or brush your teeth).

If you experience muscle weakness, cramping or numbness, and fast or irregular heartbeat, notify your doctor immediately. These could be signs of high potassium levels in the blood.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I use this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • other blood-thinning medicines e.g. aspirin, ticlopidine
  • medicines for pain and inflammation e.g. diclofenac, mefenamic acid, ibuprofen
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Nadroparin calcium.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Do not refrigerate. Do not allow to freeze.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
