Hyoscyamine - oral

Patient Medicine Information
Why do I need this medicine?
Hyoscyamine is used to help control symptoms associated with stomach diseases. It works by reducing stomach acid secretion, spasms and increased movements of the digestive tract or the bowels.

This medicine is also used to help control the symptoms of bladder spasms, Parkinson's disease (a disorder that affects the movement of a person, causing symptoms such as tremors, muscle stiffness, slowed movement and impaired balance or walking), and runny nose.

This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Hyoscyamine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Try to take it at the same time each day.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist about whether you should take this medicine with or without food. Different brands of this medicine may be taken differently.

This medicine is available as a conventional, extended release, orodispersible, or sublingual tablet. It is also available as an oral solution/drops or elixir.

If you are taking the extended-release type of tablet (usually labeled as "ER, SR"), swallow it whole. Do not divide, chew or crush the tablet.

If you are taking the orodispersible tablet:
  1. Remove it from the foil only just before you take it. Do not leave the orodispersible tablet exposed to air. Do not push the orodispersible tablet through the foil as it is fragile and easily broken.
  2. Remove the orodispersible tablet with dry hands by peeling the backing off the foil and tipping the tablet onto your dry hands.
  3. Place the orodispersible tablet directly on your tongue as soon as it is taken out of the foil. The orodispersible tablet will immediately start to melt on the tongue. It can then be swallowed with or without water.
The tablet can also be chewed depending on your doctor's advice.

Do not cut, break or crush the orodispersible tablets.

If you are taking the sublingual tablet, placed it under your tongue to be effective. It is absorbed into your body through the lining of your mouth. Do not swallow, chew, or crush the tablet.

If you are taking the oral drops, shake the bottle well before you take it to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the dropper provided to measure the prescribed dose.

If you are taking an oral solution or elixir, use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your condition.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
