Zolpidem tartrate
Indications/Uses
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 10 mg daily immediately before bedtime. Elderly & patient w/ hepatic insufficiency 5 mg (½ tab). Max: Not to exceed 10 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Do not take w/ or immediately after a meal.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Severe resp insufficiency, sleep apnoea syndrome, myasthenia. Congenital galactosemia, glucose or galactose malabsorption syndrome or lactase deficiency. Severe, acute or chronic hepatic insufficiency (risk of encephalopathy).
Special Precautions
Anaphylaxis & angioedema. Compromised resp function, presence of primary psychiatric or physical disorder, symptoms of depression, preexisting depression, history of drug or alcohol abuse, tolerance, dependence, rebound insomnia, anterograde amnesia, other psychiatric & paradoxical reactions, somnambulism & associated behaviours. May affect ability to drive or use machines. Hepatic impairment. Woman of childbearing potential. Avoid use in 1st trimester of pregnancy. Late phase of pregnancy or during labour. Not recommended during lactation. Elderly or debilitated patients. Paed <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Anterograde amnesia, behaviour disorders, impaired consciousness, irritability, aggressiveness, agitation, hallucinations, somnambulism, physical & psychic drug dependence, feeling of ebriety, headache, ataxia, confusion, drowsiness, insomnia, nightmares, tension, change in libido; skin rash, pruritis (itching), superficial or deep (angioedema) urticaria, hyperhidrosis; muscle hypotonia, asthenia, unsteady gait or falls; diplopia; diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain; elevated liver enzymes; angioedema (eg, Quincke's edema).
Drug Interactions
Enhanced sedative effect w/ alcohol. Enhanced central depressive effect w/ antipsychotics, hypnotics, anxiolytics/sedatives, antidepressant agents, narcotic analgesics, antiepileptic drugs, anaesth & sedative antihistamines. Increased drowsiness w/ sertraline. Enhanced/reduced activity of benzodiazepines & benzodiazepine-like agents w/ CYP450 inhibitors.
