Why do I need this medicine?
Mebeverine is used to treat spasms of the stomach or intestine, particularly those that are associated with irritable bowel syndrome (a long-term disorder of the digestive system that involves a group of symptoms such as abdominal cramps, bloating, constipation, and diarrhoea).
How do I take this medicine?
Take Mebeverine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist whether you should take this medicine with or without food. Different preparations of this medicine may be taken differently. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Mebeverine is available as a conventional tablet, oral suspension, and modified-release capsule.

If you are taking the conventional tablet, swallow it whole with a glass of water.

If you are taking the oral suspension, shake the bottle well before you take the medicine to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.

If you are taking the modified-release type of capsule (usually labelled as "MR"), swallow it whole. Do not divide, chew, or crush the capsule.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on your response to the medication.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have paralytic ileus (bowel obstruction caused by slow movement or paralysis of the intestines) as Mebeverine may not be suitable for you.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • irregular heartbeat or other heart problems e.g. angina (chest pain which occurs when the heart does not receive enough blood supply), heart block
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Mebeverine to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.
What side effects could I experience?
Mebeverine may cause any of the following side effects: headache, dizziness, indigestion, constipation, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping, slow heartbeat, and heartburn (burning pain in your chest caused by food or acid from your stomach that backs up into your mouth).

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, or swelling of the deep layers of the skin usually around the face, throat, and lips, stop taking this medicine and inform your doctor immediately. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

The oral suspension should be used within 14 days after opening.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
