Clomifene - oral

Patient Medicine Information
Why do I need this medicine?
Clomifene is used to treat infertility in women who are not ovulating (release of eggs from the ovary) properly.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Clomifene exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the course of treatment depending on your response to the medication.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • abnormal menstrual bleeding of unknown cause
  • uncontrolled thyroid or adrenal gland problems
  • tumour in the pituitary gland
  • type of cancer that is worsened by hormones
  • cyst on or enlargement of ovary that is not due to polycystic ovary syndrome (a hormonal disorder that may cause irregular menstrual periods, acne, or unwanted hair growth)
  • current or history of liver disease
as Clomifene may not be suitable for you.

Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant while being treated with Clomifene, alert your doctor immediately.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:

  • personal or family history of high lipid (fat) levels in the blood
Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding.

Chances of becoming pregnant with more than one baby at the same time (multiple pregnancy) or pregnancies where the baby grows outside of the womb (ectopic pregnancy) may be higher when you take Clomifene. You may discuss these risks with your doctor.

Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
  • Pregnancy tests must be done before and during treatment to know if this medicine is suited for you to take.
  • Routine tests (e.g. fat level in the blood, estrogen, estradiol, progesterone, and luteinising hormone levels) may be done before treatment or while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
  • Regular monitoring of signs and symptoms of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (an exaggerated response to excess hormones that may cause swelling and pain in the ovaries) may also be needed.
