Ambroxol - oral

Patient Medicine Information
Why do I need this medicine?
Ambroxol is used to treat lung disorders associated with abnormal, thick and viscous mucus (phlegm) secretions.

This medicine reduces the thickness of the phlegm so it can be coughed up more easily.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Ambroxol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Ambroxol is available as a conventional tablet, retard or sustained-release capsule, lozenge, or as an oral liquid or syrup.

If you are taking the retard or sustained-release type of capsule, swallow it whole. Do not divide, chew, or crush the capsule.

If you are taking the lozenge, suck the lozenge until the taste becomes strong, then lodge the lozenge between the gums and cheek. When the taste fades, start sucking it again. Repeat until the lozenge completely dissolves. Do not swallow.

If you are taking an oral liquid or syrup, use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • history of stomach ulcer
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Ambroxol to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.

Consult your doctor if your symptoms worsen or do not improve within the recommended treatment duration.
What side effects could I experience?
Ambroxol may cause any of the following side effects: diarrhoea, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, bloated feeling, dryness or numbness of the mouth or throat, altered taste, and heartburn (burning pain in your chest caused by food or acid from your stomach that backs up into your mouth).

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop taking this medicine and inform your doctor immediately. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking certain antibiotics e.g. amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from light.
