Per 5 g Plantago ovata seed 2.6 g, Ispaghula husk 0.11 g, Tinnevelly senna pods 0.34-0.66 g equiv to 15 mg hydroxyanthracene derivatives calculated as sennoside B
Indications/Uses
Traditionally used for constipation.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >10 yr 1-2 tsp (1-2 sachet) after evening meal.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Swallow granules whole w/ 250 mL of liqd. Do not chew/crush. Take at least 30 min-1 hr after other medications. Do not take immediately before bedtime. Ensure adequate fluid intake.
Contraindications
GI stenoses, ileus, uncontrolled diabetes, acute inflammatory intestinal disease, severe dehydration, abdominal pain of unknown cause. Childn <10 yr.
Special Precautions
Long-term treatment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Spasmodic GI complaints (rare). Hypersensitivity reactions to plantago (very rare). Possible harmless red colouring of urine. Pigment deposition in the intestinal mucosa. Water & electrolyte balance disorders (long-term use), K loss (can cause cardiac function disorders, myasthenia). Protein or blood in urine (long-term use).
Drug Interactions
Cardiac glycosides, antiarrhythmics, diuretics, cortisone, licorice root. Delayed absorption of other drugs present in GIT (plantago).
