Zinc sulphate monohydrate.
Description
Each mL contains 54.9 mg Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate equal to 20 mg Zinc.
Action
Zinc is used to complete the diarrhea treatment in children aged below 5 years old, taken with Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) based on WHO.
Zinc and ORS immediate-administration can lessen the duration and severity of dehydration. Since the diarrhea has stopped, take Zinc continuously to replace the lost Zinc. It will lessen the risk of recurrent diarrhea episodes on the next 2-3 months.
Indications/Uses
Complementary diarrhea therapy in children, taken with Oral Rehydration Salts.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Infant 2-6 months: ½ tsp (2.5 mL) daily in 10 days even the diarrhea has stopped.
Children 6 month-5 years: 1 tsp (5 mL) daily in 10 days even the diarrhea has stopped.
Overdosage
Although there is no either acute or chronic serious toxicity due to Zinc consumption, however this medicine is better not to use over 14 days due to chelate formation with the copper.
Special Precautions
During the diarrhea episode, Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) also be given in addition to Zinc supplementation. Breastfeeding mothers are suggested to keep and increase the frequency of breastfeeding during and after the episode of diarrhea.
Zinc accumulation may cause renal failure.

Adverse Reactions
The toxicity of Zinc can orally occur to adult due to Zinc with administration dosage >150 mg/day for a long period.
High dose of Zinc administration for a long period can lower the lypoprotein plasma concentration and copper absorption.
Adverse effect that usually occur are nausea, bitter taste, vomiting and mouth irritation.
Drug Interactions
Tetracycline: Zinc may inhibit tetracycline absorption and the concurrent use with tetracycline may inhibit Zinc absorption as well. The concurrent administration of Zinc and tetracycline should be at least 3 hours length to prevent interaction.
Quinolone: Zinc may inhibit quinolone absorption, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin and ofloxacin.
Calcium: The concurrent use with calcium may inhibit Zinc absorption.
Iron: The concurrent use with iron may inhibit Zinc absorption.
Penicillamine: Zinc may inhibit penicillamine absorption and the concurrent use with penicillamine may inhibit Zinc absorption as well.
Trientine: Zinc may inhibit trientine absorption and the concurrent use with tentrien may inhibit Zinc absorption as well.
