Indications/Uses
External infections of the eye eg, bacterial conjunctivitis & bacterial keratitis caused by aerobic gm +ve & gm -ve bacteria.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Bacterial conjunctivitis Days 1 & 2: Instill 1 drop in affected eye/s (while awake) 2 hrly up to 8 times daily. Days 3-7: 1 drop in the affected eye/s (while awake) 4 times daily. Bacterial keratitis Instill 1 drop hrly in the affected eye/s (start while awake until before sleep). Instill 2 hrly if any improvement occurs after 3 days. Subsequently, instill 3 hrly if any improvement occurs after 3 days or until the eye/s look normal.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to gatifloxacin or other quinolones.
Special Precautions
Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi. Wearing contact lens is not advised. Serious & occasionally fatal hypersensitivity reactions. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <1 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Conjunctival irritation, increased lacrimation, keratitis & papillary conjunctivitis. Chemosis, conjunctival hemorrhage, dry eye, eye irritation, discharge & pain, eyelid edema, headache, red eye, reduced visual acuity & taste disturbance.
Drug Interactions
Elevated plasma conc when used w/ theophylline. Interfere w/ the metabolism of caffeine. Enhances the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Transient elevations in serum creatinine w/ systemic cyclosporine.
