Indications/Uses
Prevention of infections in abdominal surgery.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV drip infusion given in 2 divided doses. Adult 2-4 g (base) daily. Childn 100-200 mg (base)/kg. Each dose is dissolved in 100-500 mL IV fluid & infused over 1-2 hr. Acute & elective abdominal surgery Adult & childn >12 yr 8 g as single dose infused at 0.5-1 hr pre-op. Renal insufficiency CrCl 20-40 mL/min 8 g to be mixed w/ 500 mL isotonic glucose infusion liqd at an infusion rate of 10-15 mL/min w/ 16 hr interval.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ liver disorders & who need to reduce Na intake due to heart & kidney failure & HTN. Perform liver, kidney & hematologic test in case of longterm therapy. Should be only administered by IV route. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Increased SGOT, SGPT, ALP, LDH, γ-GTP & bilirubin; proteinuria & abnormalities in the Fishberg test, elevated BUN & edema; cough, asthma; headache, feeling of numbness of the lips, spasms; agranulocytosis, eosinophilia, granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia; stomatitis, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, anorexia; eruption, urticaria, erythema, itching; phlebitis, anglalgia; dull headache, oral dryness, vertigo, chest discomfort, feeling of pressure on the chest.
