Indications/Uses
Additional therapy associated w/ diet in patients w/ DM.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially, 50 mg 3 times daily or ½ 100 mg 3 times daily up to max of 200 mg 3 times daily. Dose may be increased after 4-8 wk. Ave dose: 300 mg.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately before or during meals. Swallow whole w/ some liqd.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Chronic intestinal disorders associated w/ distinct disturbances of digestion & absorption; Roemheld's syndrome, major hernia, intestinal obstruction & ulcer; inflammatory bowel disease eg, ulcerative colitis & Crohn's disease, partial intestinal obstruction or predisposed intestinal or ileus obstruction. Severe renal impairment (CrCl <25 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescent <18 yr.
Special Precautions
Monitor liver function during the 1st 6-12 mth of therapy.
Adverse Reactions
Thrombocytopenia; allergic reaction; oedema; flatulence, diarrhea, GI & abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, subileus/ileus pneumonia cytoidis intestinalis; transient increase in liver enzymes, jaundice, hepatitis.
Drug Interactions
Sucrose & food containing sucrose cause abdominal discomfort or even diarrhea. Increased hypoglycemic effect w/ sulphonylurea, metformin or insulin. May affect digoxin bioavailability. Cholestyramine, intestinal adsorbents & digestive enzyme products should be avoided. Concomitant use w/ diuretics (ie, thiazides, furosemides), corticosteroids, phenothiazines, thyroid products, estrogens, OCs, phenytoin, nicotinic acid, sympathomimetics & INH may lead to loss of blood glucose control. Concomitant use w/ neomycin may lead to an enhanced reduction of postprandial blood glucose & to an increase in the frequency & severity of GI adverse reactions.
