Pregabalin
Indications/Uses
Peripheral & central neuropathic pain. Partial seizures w/ or w/o secondary generalisation. Generalised anxiety disorder.
Dosage/Direction for Use
150-600 mg/day given in either 2 or 3 divided doses.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Associated w/ dizziness & somnolence. May cause blurring or loss of vision, or other changes in eyesight. Some DM patients who gain wt during therapy may need an alteration in their diabetic medicines. Reports of allergic reactions; heart failure especially in elderly w/ CV conditions; kidney failure; convulsions while on therapy or shortly after discontinuation; encephalopathy in patients w/ other medical conditions, including liver or kidney disease. Monitor patients for suicidal ideation & behaviour. Risk of GI problems when concomitantly taken w/ medicines that may cause constipation. Patients w/ history of alcoholism; any drug abuse or dependence. Patients w/ renal impairment. Concomitant use w/ other medicines that have similar side effects to pregabalin. May impair ability to drive or use machines. Effective contraception must be used by women of child-bearing potential. Should not be taken during pregnancy or when breast-feeding. Not for use in childn & adolescents <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, drowsiness, headache. Increased appetite; feeling of elation, confusion, disorientation, decrease in sexual interest, irritability; disturbance in attention, clumsiness, memory impairment, loss of memory, tremor, difficulty w/ speaking, tingling feeling, numbness, sedation, lethargy, insomnia, fatigue, feeling abnormal; blurred vision, double vision; vertigo, problems w/ balance, fall; dry mouth, constipation, vomiting, flatulence, diarrhoea, nausea, swollen abdomen; difficulties w/ erection; swelling of the body including extremities; feeling drunk, abnormal style of walking; wt gain; muscle cramp, joint pain, back pain, pain in limb; sore throat.
Drug Interactions
Risk of CNS depression w/ medicines which have sedative effects including opioids. Increased degree of dizziness, sleepiness & decreased concentration w/ oxycodone, lorazepam, alcohol.
