Indications/Uses
Tab Induction of remission of mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. Maintenance of remission of ulcerative colitis & Crohn's disease. Supp Induction of remission of proctitis & proctosigmoiditis. Enema Induction of remission of proctitis, proctosigmoiditis & left-sided colitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Adult Ulcerative colitis Induction of remission: 2.4-4.8 g daily in divided doses. Maintenance of remission: 1.2-2.4 g daily in divided doses. Crohn's disease Maintenance of remission: 2.4 g daily in divided doses. Supp Adult Proctitis & proctosigmoiditis Induction of remission: 1 supp (500 mg) tds (in the morning, at noon & in the evening) after defecation. Enema Adult Proctitis, proctosigmoiditis & left-side colitis Induction of remission: 1 enema (4 g) at night.
Administration
Tab:Should be taken on an empty stomach: Swallow whole, do not chew/break.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. History of allergy to salicylates. Severe liver or renal impairment (GFR <20 mL/min). Gastric or duodenal ulcers, hemorrhagic tendency. Childn <2 yr.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ raised blood urea or proteinuria; history of sensitivity to sulphasalazine. Evaluate renal function prior to initiation of therapy & periodically while on therapy. Closely monitor patients in case of lung function impairment especially asthma. Immediately stop treatment if signs or symptoms of blood dyscrasia develop. Not recommended for use in patients w/ renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Use in the elderly should be handled w/ caution & only for patients having normal renal function.
Adverse Reactions
Rarely fever, bronchospasm, alopecia, diarrhoea & abdominal pain.
Drug Interactions
Decreased absorption of digoxin. Increased immunosuppressive effects of azathioprine & 6-mercaptopurine. Reduced uricosuric activity of probenecid & sulfinpyrazone; diuretic effect of furosemide; activity of spironolactone. Increased GI side effects of glucocorticoids.
