Cefaclor monohydrate
Indications/Uses
Otitis media & lower resp tract infections caused by Strep pneumoniae, H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, S. aureus, UTI, upper resp tract, skin & skin structure infections, gonococcal urethritis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 250 mg 8 hrly. Severe infections or those caused by less susceptible organisms Dosage may be doubled. Max daily dose: 4 g. Childn 20 mg/kg/day in divided dose, 8 hrly. More serious infections, otitis media, infections caused by less susceptible organisms 40 mg/kg/day. Max daily dose: 1 g.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Penicillin-sensitive patients. Superinfection. Impaired renal function. Pregnancy, lactation. History of GI disease.
Adverse Reactions
Allergic reactions. GI side effects. Rarely, pseudomembranous colitis, eosinophilia, SJS.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid. Oral anticoagulants. Bacteriostatic antibiotics may reduce cephalosporin effectiveness.
