Azithromycin dihydrate
Indications/Uses
Infections caused by susceptible organisms: Upper & lower resp tract, odontostomatological infections; acute otitis media; uncomplicated genital infections; chancroid. For patients w/ advanced HIV: Alone or in combination w/ rifabutin for prophylaxis against Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex (MAC) infection; in combination w/ ethambutol for the treatment of disseminated MAC (DMAC) infection.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult STD caused by C. trachomatis, H. ducreyi or N. gonorrhoeae 1,000 mg as single oral dose. MAC infections in HIV patients 1,200 mg once/wk. DMAC infections in patients w/ advanced HIV 600 mg once daily w/ other antimycobacterials eg, ethambutol at approved dose. Childn Max dose: 1,500 mg. Streptococcal pharyngitis 10 or 20 mg/kg single daily dose for 3 days. Acute otitis media 10 mg/kg single daily dose for 3 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin or other macrolides.
Special Precautions
Hepatic & severe renal impairment. Observe for signs of superinfections. Pregnancy, lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loose stools, abdominal discomfort, flatulence, abnormal liver function, rash, angioedema, hearing impairment.
Drug Interactions
Antacids, digoxin, zidovudine, ergot derivatives, coumarin-type oral anticoagulants, cyclosporin, fluconazole.
