Infections caused by susceptible organisms: Upper & lower resp tract, odontostomatological infections; acute otitis media; uncomplicated genital infections; chancroid. For patients w/ advanced HIV: Alone or in combination w/ rifabutin for prophylaxis against Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex (MAC) infection; in combination w/ ethambutol for the treatment of disseminated MAC (DMAC) infection.
Dosage/Direction for Use
AdultSTD caused byC. trachomatis, H. ducreyiorN. gonorrhoeae 1,000 mg as single oral dose. MAC infections in HIV patients 1,200 mg once/wk. DMAC infections in patients w/ advanced HIV 600 mg once daily w/ other antimycobacterials eg, ethambutol at approved dose. Childn Max dose: 1,500 mg. Streptococcal pharyngitis 10 or 20 mg/kg single daily dose for 3 days. Acute otitis media 10 mg/kg single daily dose for 3 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin or other macrolides.
Special Precautions
Hepatic & severe renal impairment. Observe for signs of superinfections. Pregnancy, lactation.
