Levonorgestrel
Indications/Uses
Intra-uterine contraception, menorrhagia, protection from endometrial hyperplasia during estrogen replacement therapy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Insert into uterine cavity w/in 7 days from onset of menstrual bleeding. Levonorgestrel 20 mcg is released daily. 1 IUD is effective for 5 yr.
Contraindications
Known or suspected pregnancy, current or recurrent pelvic inflammatory disease; lower genital tract infection; postpartum endometriosis; infected abortion during the past 3 mth; cervicitis; cervical dysplasia; uterine or cervical malignancy; undiagnosed abnormal uterine bleeding; congenital or acquired uterine anomaly including fibroids; conditions associated w/ increased susceptibility to infections; acute liver disease or liver tumor.
Special Precautions
Migraine, focal migraine w/ asymmetrical visual loss or other symptoms indicating transient cerebral ischemia; severe headache, jaundice; marked increase of BP, confirmed or suspected hormone-dependent tumors including breast cancer; severe arterial disease eg, stroke or MI.
Adverse Reactions
Menstrual changes eg, spotting, shorter or longer periods, irrregular bleeding, light or no periods, heavy or painful periods; lower abdominal pain or back pain; acne or other skin problems; breast tenderness; headache; vag discharge; mood changes; nausea; water retention; wt gain; decreased libido; sweating; hair loss & greasy hair.
Drug Interactions
Effect may be impaired by drugs which induce liver enzymes, including primidone, barbiturates, phenytoin, carbamazepine, rifampicin, oxcarbazepine or griseofulvin.
