Per tab Co-trimoxazole: Trimethoprim 80 mg, sulfamethoxazole 400 mg. Per 5 mL syr Co-trimoxazole: Trimethoprim 40 mg, sulfamethoxazole 200 mg
Indications/Uses
Infections from gm +ve, gm -ve & other susceptible microorganism eg, resp tract, GIT, GUT & skin infections, septicemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Adult 2 tab bid. Long-term treatment: 1 tab bid. Syr Childn >2 mth Usual dose: TMP 40 mg/kg/day to 1 mL (TMP 8 mg, SMX 40 mg)/kg/day divided to bid. 10 kg body wt 5 mL bid, 20 kg body wt 10 mL bid, 30 kg body wt 15 mL bid, 40 kg body wt 20 mL bid.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Severely impaired hepatic or renal function; hypersensitivity to sulfonamides, blood dyscrasias. Pregnancy & lactation. Infant <2 mth. Porphyria.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ folic acid deficiency, poor nutritional states or G6PD deficiency. Elderly & patients w/ reduced kidney function.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances; SJS & Lyell's syndrome. Rarely, hepatitis, blood disorders, Pseudomembranous colitis.
Drug Interactions
Effects reduced by PABA & procaine-type local anaesth & enhanced by highly-bound drugs. May potentiate effects of MTX, warfarin, sulfonylureas.
