Memantine HCl
Indications/Uses
Moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 5 mg/day on the 1st wk, 10 mg/day on the 2nd wk, then 15 mg/day on the 3rd wk. From the 4th wk on, treatment can be continued w/ the recommended maintenance dose of 20 mg/day. Max: 20 mg/day. Elderly 20 mg/day (10 mg bid or 20 mg once daily).
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to memantine.
Special Precautions
Epilepsy. Co-administration w/ NMDA-antagonists (eg, amantadine, ketamine or dextromethorphan). Careful monitoring of patients w/ factors that may raise urine pH. Recent MI, uncompensated CHF, uncontrolled HTN. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Agitation, inflicted injury, urinary incontinence, diarrhea, insomnia, dizziness, headache, hallucinations, fall, constipation, coughing. Tiredness.
Drug Interactions
Levodopa, dopaminergic agonists, anticholinergics, barbiturates, neuroleptics, antispasmodic agents (dantrolene or baclofen), phenytoin, cimetidine, ranitidine, procainamide, quinidine, quinine, nicotine,  hydrochlorothiazide. Avoid administration w/ amantadine, ketamine & dextromethorphan.
