Fenofibrate
Indications/Uses
Hypercholesterolaemia &/or hypertriglyceridaemia in adults when the response to an appropriate & correctly observed diet is inadequate.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 200 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Severe chronic kidney disease; photoallergy or phototoxic reaction w/ fibrates or ketoprofen; gallbladder disease. Hepatic insufficiency. Childn <18 yr.
Special Precautions
Treat secondary causes of hypercholesterolemia prior to fenofibrate therapy. Raised lipid values w/ estrogen in hyperlipidemic patients. Monitor liver & renal functions. Not to be used in patients w/ galactose intolerance. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn. Elderly >70 yr.
Adverse Reactions
GI signs & symptoms; cutaneous hypersensitivity; increased transaminases; muscle disorders.
Drug Interactions
Potentiated effects of anticoagulants. Nephrotoxicity w/ cyclosporine. Increased risk of serious muscle toxicity w/ 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG CoA) reductase inhibitors.
