Levodopa 200 mg, benserazide HCl 50 mg
Indications/Uses
Parkinson's disease. Symptoms of parkinsonism excluding drug-induced parkinsonism.
Dosage/Direction for Use
125-250 mg tid, titrated to individual needs.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Best taken at least 30 min before or 1 hr after meals. May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Severely decompensated endocrine, renal, hepatic or cardiac disorders, psychoses or severe psychoneuroses, narrow-angle glaucoma. Concomitant use w/ MAOIs except selegeline. Patients <25 yr. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
History of gastric ulcer or osteomalacia. Discontinue use 12-48 hr before surgery requiring general anesth. Avoid anesth w/ cyclopropane or halothane in patients who should undergo surgery w/ Levopar not withdrawn. Monitor liver, kidney function & blood counts during therapy.
Adverse Reactions
Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, CV disorders, adventitious movements eg, choreiform &/or dystonic movements, increased transaminase & alkaline phosphatase levels, hemolytic anemia, transient thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, mental disturbances.
Drug Interactions
Sympathomimetics, antacids, pyridoxine, protein-rich meal.
