Dosage/Direction for Use
Herpes simplex Adult & childn >2 yr 200 mg 5 times daily approx 4 hrly, omitting the night dose for 5 days. Herpes zoster & varicella Adult 800 mg 5 times daily approx 4 hrly, omitting the night dose for 7 days. Childn >6 yr 800 mg qid for 5 days, 2-6 yr 400 mg qid for 5 days, <2 yr 200 mg qid for 5 days. Approx dose: 20 mg/kg body wt qid. Suppressive recurrent genital herpes 200 mg qid or 400 mg bid.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Renal impairment.
Adverse Reactions
Rash, GI effects eg, nausea & vomiting, dizziness.
Drug Interactions
Mean t½ & plasma conc increase w/ probenecid.
