Clarithromycin
Indications/Uses
Mild to moderate upper & lower resp tract, skin & soft tissue infections. Disseminated mycobacterial infections, duodenal ulcer due to H. pylori.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 250 mg bid. Severe infection 500 mg bid for 6-14 days. Mycobacterial infections 500 mg bid. Renal impairment CrCl <30 mL/min 250 mg once daily or bid for severe infections for not >14 days. Childn 15 mg/kg/day divided dose 12 hrly up to 500 mg bid for 10 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to macrolides.
Special Precautions
Pregnancy, lactation, impaired hepatic function. Renal impairment.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting & dyspepsia, headache & taste perversion.
Drug Interactions
Carbamazepine, theophylline, zidovudine, ergot alkaloid.
