Salbutamol sulfate
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic relief & prevention of mild, moderate or severe asthma.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Max: 8 inhalations in 24 hr. Adult (including elderly) Relief of acute asthma symptoms including bronchospasm 1 inhalation as a single min starting dose. May be increased to 2 inhalations if necessary. Prevention of allergen- or exercise-induced symptoms 2 inhalations 10-15 min before challenge. Chronic therapy 2 inhalations up to qid. Childn Relief of acute asthma (including bronchospasms) & prevention of allergen- or exercise-induced 1 inhalation or 2 inhalations, if necessary. Chronic therapy 2 inhalations up to qid.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to salbutamol, sympathomimetic amines, aerosol propellants. Hyperthyroidism; tachyarrythmia.
Special Precautions
Discontinue if immediate hypersensitivity or paradoxical bronchospasm occurs. Concomitant use w/ xanthine derivatives, steroids & diuretics. Patients w/ underlying CV disorders, especially coronary insufficiency, cardiac arrhythmia & HTN; thyrotoxicosis; acute severe asthma; underlying severe heart disease (eg, ischemic heart disease, arrhythmia or severe heart failure). Do not exceed recommended dose. Co-existing conditions eg, convulsive disorders, hyperthyroidism or DM in patients who are usually responsive to sympathomimetic amines. Significant hypokalemia. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
Pulmonary effect may be blocked & severe bronchospasm may be produced w/ β-blockers eg, propranolol. Other short-acting sympathomimetic aerosol bronchodilators. Effects may be enhanced by aminophylline or other xanthines. May acutely worsen ECG changes & hypokalemia w/ non-K sparing diuretics (eg, loop or thiazide diuretics). Decrease serum levels of digoxin. Action on the vascular system may be potentiated by MAOIs & TCAs.
