Bezafibrate
Indications/Uses
Hyperlipidaemias of types IIa, IIb III, IV & V (Fredrickson classification). For use only in patients w/ a fully defined & diagnosed abnormality where diet alone is insufficient to correct the condition & in whom the long-term risks associated w/ the condition warrant treatment.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Recommended dose: 3 tab daily. Maintenance: may occasionally reduce to 2 tab daily, particularly in hypertriglyceridaemia.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Severe liver dysfunction or primary biliary cirrhosis. Severe renal disorders (serum creatinine >6 mg/100 mL). Nephrotic syndrome.
Special Precautions
Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Appetite loss, nausea or gastric discomfort.
Drug Interactions
Anticoagulant (coumarin-type). May potentiate the action of antidiabetic medications including insulin. May impair absorption w/ an ion-exchange resin. Not to be administered w/ MAOIs. Oestrogens.
