Atenolol
Indications/Uses
Management of HTN & angina pectoris. Dysrhythmias.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Angina 100 mg daily as a single or divided dose. HTN 100 mg daily as a single dose. May be combined w/ other antihypertensives (eg, diuretic) to further reduce BP.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Patients w/ untreated cardiac failure. May temporarily w/draw (until failure has been controlled) where CHF appears during treatment. May reduce dose if w/ symptoms attributable to slow heart rate. Occasionally, some increase in airway resistance may occur in asthmatic patients. Do not abruptly discontinue in patients w/ ischaemic heart disease. Do not discontinue clonidine until several days after Vascoten w/drawal when used concurrently. W/draw treatment 48-hr prior to surgery. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Cold extremities, muscular fatigue, bradycardia; skin rashes, dry eyes.
Drug Interactions
Anesth, antidiabetic agents (oral or insulin), antihypertensives, diuretics, NSAIDs, Ca channel blockers, cimetidine, clonidine, diazoxide, digitalis glycosides, lidocaine, nicotine, phenothiazines, reserpine, sympathomimetics, timolol, xanthines.
