Loperamide HCl
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic control of acute & chronic diarrhea. Diarrhea caused by the removal of intestines.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult (including elderly) Acute diarrhea Initially 2 cap, followed by 1 cap after each loose stool. Chronic diarrhea Individualized dosing. Max: 8 cap/day. Childn ≥6 yr Acute diarrhea Initially 1 cap, followed by 1 cap after each loose stool. Chronic diarrhea Individualized dosing.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Presence of blood in the stools or high temp; lower bowel inflammation (eg, ulcerative colitis or pseudomembranous colitis); condition where slowing of the intestine should be avoided (eg, constipation or swollen abdomen). Childn <2 yr.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if symptoms of acute diarrhea do not stop w/in 48 hr; in case of abdominal swelling or bulging in AIDS patients. Reports of serious heart problems if taken more than the necessary dose. Do not abuse & misuse. Liver problems. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Severe hypersensitivity; extreme tiredness, unable to move in a coordinated way, loss of consciousness; severe stomach pain, stomach bulging or swelling or fever due to blocked enlarge bowel. Dry mouth, indigestion, stomach pain, discomfort or bloating, feeling sick, vomiting, passing wind, constipation; headache, feeling dizzy, sleepy or tired, weak; rash; urinary retention; constricted pupils.
Drug Interactions
Possible interaction w/ ritonavir, quinidine, oral desmopressin, itraconazole or ketoconazole, gemfibrozil.
