Live attenuated yellow fever virus (17D-204 strain)
Indications/Uses
Active immunization against yellow fever in persons travelling to, passing through or living in an area where there is a current or periodic risk of transmission; travelling to any country that requires an International Certificate of Vaccination for entry; handling potentially infectious materials (eg, laboratory personnel).
Dosage/Direction for Use
SC/IM Primary vaccination Adult & childn ≥9 mth 0.5 mL as single dose at least 10 days before exposure. Elderly Adult dose. Re-vaccination 0.5 mL as single dose. May be needed in patients who had an insufficient immune response after their primary vaccination. Duration: At least 10 yr & may be life-long.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to eggs, chicken proteins. Severe hypersensitivity reactions (eg, anaphylaxis) after a previous dose of any yellow fever vaccine. Congenital or acquired immunosuppression; history of thymus dysfunction including myasthenia gravis, thymoma. Thymectomy. Symptomatic or asymptomatic HIV infection. Moderate or severe febrile or acute illness. Infant <6 mth.
Special Precautions
Do not inject intravascularly. Do not give by IM route to persons w/ bleeding disorder (eg, haemophilia or thrombocytopenia) or on anticoagulant therapy. Place procedures to prevent injury from faints & manage syncopal reactions. Yellow fever vaccine-associated neurotropic & viscerotropic diseases. Do not administer to immunosuppressed persons & those w/ symptomatic or asymptomatic HIV infection. Delay vaccination until at least 1 mth after completing the course in patients who received systemic corticosteroids for ≥14 days. False positive results w/ laboratory &/or diagnostic tests for other flavivirus related diseases (eg, dengue or Japanese encephalitis). May not protect 100% of vaccinated individuals. Contains Na (23 mg/dose), K (39 mg/dose), sorbitol; tip caps of pre-filled syringes contains latex. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn 6-9 mth; & in those born to HIV positive mothers. Elderly ≥60 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Appetite loss; drowsiness, headache; vomiting; myalgia; irritability, crying, pyrexia, asthenia, inj site pain/tenderness. Nausea; rash; arthralgia; inj site erythema/redness, hematoma, induration, oedema/swelling.
Drug Interactions
Do not mix w/ other vaccine or medicinal product. May result in immunocompromised status w/ immunosuppressive therapies (eg, high-dose systemic corticosteroids, biologicals, radiotherapy, cytotoxic drugs).
