Indications/Uses
Anti-inflammatory, analgesic & anti-pyretic. Relaxes & inhibits striated muscle spasm.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >14 yr Initially 2 cap/tab followed by 1 cap/tab every 6 hr as needed. Max duration: 1 wk.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to aspirin or other NSAIDs. Do not give to patients in whom these drugs induce symptoms of bronchospasm, allergic rhinitis or urticaria. Not to be used in patients w/ glaucoma, achalasia, prostatic hypertrophy, bladder neck obstruction or myasthenia gravis. Childn <14 yr. Mefenamic acid: Patients w/ active ulceration or chronic inflammation of either upper or lower GIT; avoid in patients w/ pre-existing renal disease.
Special Precautions
Contains tartrazine which may cause allergic type reactions (including bronchial asthma) in certain susceptible individuals. Pregnancy; not recommended in late pregnancy due to foetal CV system effects; may cause foetal renal dysfunction leading to oligohydramnios & neonatal renal impairment (in some cases) during use at about 20 wk gestation or later in pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhoea, nausea w/ or w/o vomiting & abdominal pain. Leukopenia, eosinophilia, pancytopenia, thrombocytopenic purpura, agranulocytosis & bone marrow hypoplasia; drowsiness, dizziness, nervousness, headache, blurred vision & insomnia; urticaria, rash & facial oedema; papillary necrosis, renal failure, haematuria & dysuria; eye irritation, ear pain, perspiration & mild hepatic toxicity, mouth dryness w/ difficulty in swallowing, thirst, pupil dilatation w/ loss of accommodation & photophobia, increased IOP, skin flushing, transient bradycardia followed by tachycardia w/ palpitations & arrhythmias, difficult micturition & constipation. Mefenamic acid: Auto-immune hemolytic anaemia (continuous administration for ≥12 mth).
Drug Interactions
Mefenamic acid: May prolong prothrombin time w/ anti-coagulants. Orphenadrine citrate: Induced enzymatic systems involving metabolism of aminopyrine, steroidal contraceptives, griseofulvin, hexobarbital & phenylbutazone; potentiate other anticholinergics.
