Betamethasone valerate
Indications/Uses
Eczema including atopic, infantile, discoid & stasis eczemas, prurigo, psoriasis, neuro-dermatoses including lichen simplex, lichen planus, seborrhoeic dermatitis, intertrigo, contact sensitivity reactions, discoid lupus erythematosus, generalised erythroderma. Management of insect bites, sunburn, prickly heat & otitis externa.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Apply a small quantity to the affected areas bd or tds until improvement occurs.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Rosacea, acne & peri-oral dermatitis. Skin lesions caused by infection w/ viruses (eg, herpes simplex, chickenpox), fungi (eg, candidiasis, tinea) or bacteria (eg, impetigo).
Special Precautions
If patient presents symptoms eg, blurred vision or other visual disturbances, consider referral to an ophthalmologist for evaluation of possible causes which may include cataract, glaucoma or rare diseases (eg, central serous chorioretinopathy). Prolonged treatment may exhibit atrophic facial changes. Avoid contact w/ eyes. W/draw if there is any spread of infection. Pregnancy. Avoid long-term continuous therapy where possible particularly in infants & childn due to the risk of adrenal suppression.
Adverse Reactions
Blurred vision. Prolonged & intensive use: May cause local atrophic skin changes [eg, striae, thinning & dilatation of superficial blood vessels (particularly when occlusive dressings are used or when skin folds are involved)]; hypercorticism features (more likely in infants & childn).

Additional Information
Exemptions granted for limited sale and supply without prescription (with effect from 31 March 2016):
As a topical preparation (as valerate or dipropionate salt) and as a single agent not exceeding 0.1%
Indication: Symptomatic relief of inflammatory skin or scalp disorders such as dermatitis and eczema
Maximum daily dose: Apply to affected areas twice daily
Maximum supply: 15 g for cream/ointment/gel; 30 mL for topical solution
Minimum age: 18 years
