Post-exposure prophylaxis w/ rabies vaccine for patients suspected of rabies exposure. Patients previously immunized w/ rabies vaccine & w/ confirmed adequate rabies Ab titer should receive vaccine only. Recommended to be used in combination w/ vaccine for both bite & nonbite exposures regardless of time interval between exposure & initiation of post-exposure prophylaxis for unvaccinated patients.
For infiltration & IM use only. IM 20 IU/kg given as soon as possible after exposure, preferably at the time of 1st vaccine dose or w/in 7 days after 1st dose of vaccine. Full dose should be infiltrated in the area around & into the wound & the rest should be administered IM into the deltoid muscle of the upper arm or lateral thigh muscle & distant from the site of vaccine administration.

Special Precautions
Not to be used alone for prevention; beyond 7 days after 1st vaccine dose. Severe hypersensitivity reactions may occur. History of prior systemic allergic reactions to human Ig prep. Patients w/ isolated IgA deficiency. Risk of transmitting infectious agents eg, viruses, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) agent & theoretically, the CJD agent. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn. Elderly.
Not for repeated dose administration once vaccine treatment has been initiated. Other Ab in the HyperRAB prep may interfere w/ the response to live vaccines (eg, measles, mumps, polio or rubella); defer immunization w/ live vaccines for 4 mth after administration.
