Doxylamine is used to relieve symptoms of respiratory allergies (e.g. runny nose, sneezing, itchy nose or throat, and itchy, watery eyes) .
This medicine may also be used in the management of insomnia (difficulty falling sleep).
Doxylamine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Doxylamine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine may be taken with food or with a glass of milk. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have asthma as Doxylamine may not be suitable for you.
Do not give this medicine to children below 12 years old especially to newborn infants unless instructed to do so by the doctor.
Inform your doctor if you have any of these;
- heart disease
- angle closure glaucoma (increased pressure inside the eye)
- prostate hyperplasia (enlarged prostate gland)
- pyloroduodenal obstruction (obstruction of the stomach outlet)
- breathing disorder
- thyroid dysfunction
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Doxylamine.
Practise good sleeping habits to reduce reliance on sleeping pills. These are some good
sleeping habits which you should follow:
- Try to relax before bedtime. Do not engage in strenuous activities.
- Try to go to bed at about the same time every night.
- Have a light dinner. A heavy dinner may disturb your sleep.
- Avoid caffeine in the evening. Caffeine-containing food and drink include coffee, tea, certain
soft drinks and even chocolate.
- Avoid drinking alcohol before bedtime.
- Keep your bedroom quiet, dark and airy.
- Avoid taking naps especially in the late afternoon.
Doxylamine may cause dizziness, drowsiness, and blurred and double vision. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be mentally alert and physically coordinated.
Other side effects may include any of the following:; headache, dry mouth, difficulty urinating, constipation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and loss of appetite.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- fast/irregular heartbeat
- hallucinations (seeing, hearing or feeling things that are not existent), disorientation, loss of control of body movements, seizures (fits)
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicines for depression e.g. fluoxetine, fluvoxamine
- medicines for epilepsy (fits) e.g. phenobarbital, phenytoin
- medicines for moderate to severe pain e.g. oxycodone
- other medicines for allergy e.g. hydroxyzine, azelastine
- other medicines used to treat difficulty sleeping e.g. zolpidem, midazolam
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Doxylamine.
Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
