Dithranol is used to treat psoriasis (a type of skin disease that allows the skin cells to rapidly build up causing itchy patches of thick, red skin and silvery scales).
Apply Dithranol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more often or over a larger area than instructed by your doctor.
If you are using the cream on the skin, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Clean and dry the affected area before application.
- Rub the cream gently on the affected skin until it disappears. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Allow the cream to remain in contact with the affected area for 10-30 minutes. If this is your first time using the cream, you should leave it in contact with the affected area for no more than 10 minutes.
- Wash your hands after using.
- When removing the cream, rinse with plenty of lukewarm water only. Soap may be used for washing after the cream has been rinsed off.
If you are using the cream on the scalp, follow these steps:
- Wash hair with shampoo.
- Rinse hair and then apply the cream on the affected area while the hair is still damp.
- Leave on as instructed above.
- Wash your hands after using.
- Rinse well using plenty of lukewarm water only. Further shampoo may be used after the cream has been removed.
Dithranol cream can stain the skin, you may use disposable gloves during application to prevent staining of fingers. It may also stain fabrics; contact should be avoided if possible. If staining occurs, rinse and wash with lukewarm water only as soon as possible.
Clean your tub or shower immediately after rinsing the cream to prevent staining.
Avoid any contact of this medicine with your face, eyes, mouth, genitalia, skin folds, and unaffected skin areas. Rinse immediately if this medicine gets into your eyes or mouth. Alert your doctor if you start to have any problems with your eyes or have accidentally swallowed this medicine.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the severity of your condition and your response to the medication.
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you often forget to apply your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- acute pustular psoriasis (a rare type of psoriasis that causes sudden appearance of pus-filled spots)
- swollen or infected skin
as Dithranol may not be suitable for you.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Certain factors such as dry and cold weather, stress, trauma to the skin, infections, alcohol, and smoking can trigger or worsen psoriasis. Take good care of your skin by keeping it clean, moisturised and free from cuts and infections. Avoid going out during dry and cold weather. Learn to manage your stress, avoid alcohol, and quit smoking. Regular exercise, eating a balanced diet, and maintaining a healthy weight are also good for your overall health and wellness.
Dithranol may cause any of the following side effects: rash, redness or burning sensation of the skin, and nail, skin or hair discolouration.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any of these medicines:
- topical steroids (anti-inflammatory medicines)
- other medicines for psoriasis e.g. methoxsalen
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Dithranol.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
