Indications/Uses
Inflammations of the anterior eye together w/ an infection caused by gentamicin-sensitive germs or in case of a risk of bacterial infection, allergic inflammations of the anterior eye (eye drops) or conjunctiva & eyelid (eye oint) w/ bacterial superinfections.
Eye drops Instill 1 drop 4-6 times daily into the conjunctival sac. Max treatment duration: 2 wk. Eye oint Apply 1 cm strip 4-6 times daily into the conjunctival sac. Max treatment duration: 2 wk.
Consult a doctor if patient experiences swelling & wt gain around the trunk & in the face. Adrenal gland suppression may develop after stopping a long-term or intensive treatment. Risk in childn & patients treated w/ ritonavir or cobicistat. Consider referral to an ophthalmologist if patient presents w/ symptoms eg, blurred vision or other visual disturbances. Contact lenses should not be worn during treatment. Prolonged use may give rise to overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms & fungi. Discontinue use if irritation or hypersensitivity develops. Cross-allergenicity among aminoglycosides or corticosteroids. Pregnancy (not to be used w/in the 1st trimester & during the later course of pregnancy) & lactation. Eye drops: Benzalkonium Cl-content may cause eye irritations or discoloration of soft contact lenses. Childn <8 yr. Eye oint: May retard corneal healing. Wool fat content may cause local skin irritations (eg, contact dermatitis). Do not drive, operate machines or work w/o stable footing shortly after application. Childn <6 yr.
Potentially, allergic reactions, temporary light burning sensation in the eye; may increase IOP w/ prolonged use, irreversible lens opacity in childn; herpes simplex keratitis, corneal perforation in an existing inflammation, fungal infections, aggravation of corneal bacterial infection, upper eyelid droping, pupil dilatation; wound healing disorders (after corneal injuries); hypersensitive reactions w/ itching, oedema or eczema of the eyelid; (for eye drops only) cloudy patches on the cornea due to Ca build-up during treatment in some patients w/ severe corneal damage.
Drug Interactions
May cause an additional IOP increase in concomitant use w/ atropine & other anticholinergics. May cause visible precipitates in the conjunctival sac w/ amphotericin B, heparin, sulfadiazine, cephalotin & cloxacillin. May increase dexamethasone blood levels in concomitant use w/ ritonavir or cobicistat.
