Why do I need this medicine?
Danazol is used to treat endometriosis (abnormal growth of tissues outside the womb).

This medicine may also used to reduce breast pain and tenderness in certain breast problems and to prevent attacks of hereditary angioedema (an inherited disorder that causes swelling of the face, throat, lips, limbs, genitals, and intestines).

Danazol may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Danazol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take this medicine consistently either always with or always without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

The dose of Danazol will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the course of treatment depending on the severity of your condition and response to the medication.

This medicine must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking Danazol even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • current or a history of blood clotting disorders
  • unexplained or unusual vaginal bleeding
  • porphyria (an inherited disorder that causes skin or nervous system abnormalities)
  • cancer that is dependent on sex hormones
  • severe kidney disease
  • severe liver disease
  • severe heart problems
as Danazol may not be suitable for you.

Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. If you become pregnant while being treated with Danazol, alert your doctor immediately. This medicine may cause harm to your unborn child. You must use proven birth control methods while taking Danazol.

Do not take this medicine if you are breastfeeding.

Do not take Danazol with simvastatin (a cholesterol-lowering medicine).
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • diabetes
  • high blood pressure
  • heart disease
  • migraine (severe throbbing pain or pulsating sensation usually affecting one side of the head that is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound)
  • epilepsy (fits or seizures)
  • polycythaemia (high red blood cell count that leads to thicker blood)
  • problems in breaking down fats in the body
  • mild to moderate kidney disease
  • mild to moderate liver disease
If you are going to have certain laboratory tests (e.g. tests for blood proteins and male/female sex hormones), inform your doctor that you are taking Danazol.

Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
  • Pregnancy tests must be done before treatment to know if this medicine is suited for you to take.
  • Routine tests (e.g. liver or kidney function, blood cholesterol or sugar levels, complete blood count) may be done while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
  • Your blood pressure may rise to unsafe levels without you noticing it. Monitor your blood pressure regularly during treatment.
What side effects could I experience?
Danazol may cause any of the following side effects: headache, dizziness, nausea, constipation, back pain, muscle cramps, joint pain or swelling, changes in appetite, nervousness, depressed mood, acne, flushing, and skin rash.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain, dark coloured urine, tiredness
  • pain, swelling and tenderness in your leg accompanied by redness and warmth
  • weakness or numbness on one side of the body, trouble speaking, changes in balance or coordination
  • severe headache, dizziness, vomiting, blurred vision
  • sore throat, deepening or hoarseness of the voice, hair loss, weight gain, swelling of the ankles, feet, or hand
  • reduced breast size, changes in menstrual cycle, vaginal dryness or irritation
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Do not take Danazol with simvastatin (a cholesterol-lowering medicine).

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • other cholesterol-lowering medicines e.g. atorvastatin, lovastatin
  • medicines used for organ transplants or certain immune disorders e.g. ciclosporin, tacrolimus
  • medicines for diabetes e.g. insulin
  • carbamazepine (medicine for epilepsy [fits or seizures])
  • warfarin (blood-thinning medicine)
  • alfacalcidol (medicine for hypoparathyroidism [low level of parathyroid hormones])
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Danazol.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from light and moisture.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
