Clobetasol propionate
Indications/Uses
Cream/Oint: Short-term treatment of inflammatory & pruritic manifestations of moderate to severe corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses. Scalp application: Psoriasis & recalcitrant scalp eczema.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Apply sparingly on affected areas & rub in once daily to bd.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Cream/Oint: Rosacea, acne vulgaris, perioral dermatitis, primary cutaneous viral infections (eg, herpes simplex, chickenpox). Primary infected skin lesions caused by infection w/ fungi (eg, candidiasis, tinea) or bacteria (eg, impetigo), perianal & genital pruritus. Not recommended for infants <1 yr. Scalp application: Scalp infections, dermatoses including dermatitis in childn <1 yr.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if irritation or sensitivity develops. Application to extensive surface area. Avoid long-term continuous therapy. Not for ophth use or use in or around the eyes. Consider referral to an ophthalmologist if patient presents w/ symptoms eg, blurred vision or other visual disturbances. Pregnancy & lactation. Possible systemic absorption causing growth retardation in paed patients.
Adverse Reactions
Burning, itching, irritation, dryness, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, skin maceration, secondary infection, skin atrophy, striae, miliaria. Hyperactivity of the adrenal cortex (in large doses). Blurred vision.
